Sunday is arts & culture day on The Grant Brief.

One of these funds Shakespeare productions. The other funds visual arts education in underserved communities. What connects them: both are small foundations where the actual grant data tells a more specific story than the program description does.

1. Play On Shakespeare, Production Support

Rolling, no stated deadline. US and international.

Funder profile: kindora.co/funders/831161065

What we know: Play On Shakespeare made 51 grants totaling $2.7M over 2023 to 2025, with a median of $26,000 but a 2025 median of $53,750, suggesting award sizes are climbing. Top recipients include National Asian American Theatre Company ($645,000 over two grants), Idaho Shakespeare Festival ($250,000), and Magic Theatre ($241,000 over three grants). Grants concentrate in New York, California, and Oregon.

Realistic fit: established theater companies already producing or planning a Play On Shakespeare translation, not general-purpose arts orgs looking for flexible funding.

2. Robert Lehman Foundation, Art Education Grants (underserved communities)

$10,000 typical grant. US. Portal opens Aug 15, deadline Sep 15, 2026.

Funder profile: kindora.co/funders/136094018

What we know: The foundation made 150 grants totaling $5.7M over 2023 to 2025, with a median of $10,000. But the headline number is misleading: Metropolitan Museum of Art alone received $3.3M across three grants, roughly 58% of all lifetime giving. Over 53% of grants go to New York recipients, with Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania making up most of the rest. The program says "underserved communities," but the grantee list skews toward major museums and established cultural institutions.

Realistic fit: 501(c)(3) visual arts education programs, ideally in the Northeast, with a clear underserved-communities angle. Smaller orgs do get funded, but expect $7,500 to $25,000, not six figures.

If your organization doesn't produce Shakespeare translations or run visual arts education programs for underserved communities, neither of these is the right fit. Both funders reward specificity over broad mission alignment.
