Three funders open now across the environmental field — one national and unusually broad, one focused on sustainable forestry, and one of the largest climate-and-environment funders in the country (regional to western Pennsylvania). All three fund real outside organizations, not their own affiliates.

What we know: Anderson-Rogers is a small but genuinely open national funder — 99 grants totaling $1.3 million in its latest year at a $10,000 median, with recipients including the Center for Biological Diversity. It accepts unsolicited inquiries from any U.S. 501(c)(3), which makes it one of the more accessible doors on this list, though the awards are modest.

Realistic fit: small to mid-size U.S. nonprofits doing environmental protection, conservation, or climate work who can do a lot with a $10,000–$25,000 grant.

What we know: The Weyerhaeuser Family Foundation (distinct from the company) made 50 grants totaling $1.27 million at a $25,000 median, with recipients including Mt. Adams Resource Stewards. This initiative funds the intersection of healthy forests and the communities that depend on them — sustainable forestry, land stewardship, and rural resilience. Intake is a Letter of Inquiry, next cycle closing January 1.

Realistic fit: conservation and rural-community nonprofits working on forests, land stewardship, or the community economics of natural-resource lands.

What we know: Heinz is one of the country's larger place-based funders — 1,100 grants totaling $170.9 million in its latest year at a $70,000 median. Its Climate, Environment & Health program funds air and water quality, climate resilience, and environmental health, but it is firmly rooted in southwestern Pennsylvania. If you're outside the Pittsburgh region, this isn't your funder.

Realistic fit: western Pennsylvania nonprofits working on climate, clean air and water, or environmental health, with the capacity to manage a substantial grant.

The honest read: Anderson-Rogers is the broadly-open national option (small dollars); Weyerhaeuser is national but specialized; Heinz is large but tightly regional. Match the door to your work and your geography.
