These two operate on completely different timelines and serve different applicant pools, but both fund the operational side of health work: direct service delivery, community programming, and prevention infrastructure rather than research.

What we know: This is a new NOFO with roughly $9 million in total program funding and an estimated 26 awards. Eligibility is limited to federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native tribes, tribal organizations, Urban Indian Organizations, and consortia of tribes or tribal organizations. The focus is community-driven substance use and overdose prevention for youth and young adults through age 24, using evidence-based strategies adapted to local context. No cost share required.

Realistic fit: Tribal health departments, Urban Indian Organizations, and tribal behavioral health programs with existing prevention infrastructure and community partnerships.

What we know: Novo Nordisk doesn't file a US 990 as a private foundation, so we don't have granular grant history. The program funds health-related initiatives, community support, independent education programs, and patient health education through an open portal. Public reporting from Grantmakers In Health cited $9 million in US health grants in a recent fiscal year, with individual awards ranging from roughly $750,000 to $2 million for multi-year chronic disease prevention and food equity projects. Sponsorships are handled separately through internal staff and aren't part of this channel.

Realistic fit: Established health-focused nonprofits running chronic disease prevention, patient education, or community health programs with clear measurable outcomes and multi-year implementation plans.

The SAMHSA grant is tightly scoped to tribal organizations. If your nonprofit isn't a federally recognized tribe, tribal org, or Urban Indian Organization, that one isn't for you. Novo Nordisk's corporate giving is broader but favors large, structured health programs over grassroots community work.
