Sunday is arts & culture day on The Grant Brief.

Both of these funders accept unsolicited proposals and review on fixed cycles, but they fund opposite ends of the arts ecosystem. One backs gatherings. The other backs the organizations that keep artists working year-round. That distinction matters when you're deciding where to put your application energy.

1. Terra Foundation for American Art, Convening Grants

$10,000 to $25,000 / US and international / Inquiry due Sep 28, 2026; proposal due Nov 30, 2026

Funder profile: kindora.co/funders/362999442

What we know: Terra made 225 grants in 2024 totaling $14.7 million at a median of $70,000, heavily concentrated in arts and culture. The foundation is genuinely international: 34 expenditure-responsibility grants totaling $4.3 million across 15 countries, with top recipients in the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. Domestically, Illinois (79 grants) and New York (57 grants) dominate. The foundation's top grantee is its own affiliated fund ($3.75 million), and major recipients include The Studio Museum in Harlem ($1 million) and the Smithsonian American Art Museum (5 grants, $672,535). The Convening Grants program sits at the small end of Terra's range: $10,000 to $25,000 for conferences and workshops, while the foundation-wide median is $50,000. Realistic fit: museums, university art departments, and cultural organizations planning a scholarly or professional convening focused on American art or Indigenous art of North America.

2. Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Multi-year Program Support

$60,000 to $100,000 over two years / US / Deadline Sep 1, 2026

Funder profile: kindora.co/funders/133410749

What we know: Warhol made 772 grants over 2023 to 2026 totaling $63.5 million. Arts and culture accounts for 447 of those grants. New York (192 grants) and California (112 grants) together represent nearly 40% of all awards, but grantees span 20+ states. Creative Capital Foundation received $9.7 million across 5 grants, making it a major regrantor in the portfolio. Other top recipients include the Andy Warhol Museum ($1.5 million combined) and J. Paul Getty Trust ($1 million). The foundation-wide median is $50,000, which sits just below this program's $60,000 floor. Fiscal sponsorships are not accepted, and organizations must wait a full year after completing a prior Warhol grant before reapplying. Realistic fit: established 501(c)(3) visual arts organizations with a track record of artist-centered programming (exhibitions, residencies, public art) and organizational stability, not brand-new groups launching a first project.

If your organization doesn't center visual arts or American art scholarship, neither of these is the right fit. Terra funds convenings, not programs. Warhol funds sustained programming, not one-off events. Match the funder to the activity you're already doing.
