Friday is environment & climate day on The Grant Brief.
It's also Juneteenth, worth holding alongside the work because environmental justice runs through this beat. Toxics, clean water, energy burden, heat exposure: the communities carrying the most weight from those harms are disproportionately the ones Juneteenth asks us to keep in view. Both grants below land in that intersection.
1. Roy A Hunt Foundation, Environment Initiative
$25K to $75K, United States, LOI due July 10

What we know: The most recent 990 shows just four grants totaling $15.6M, all to a single unnamed grantee, all in Pennsylvania. The headline annual-giving figure is misleading for this program; the Environment Initiative is one slice of a broader giving-circle structure, and the published $25K to $75K is the right anchor. Exclusions are sharp: no capital, no easements, no local watersheds or land trusts, no direct lobbying, no international NGOs.
Realistic fit: US 501(c)(3)s doing policy, advocacy, public education, or applied research in climate and energy, toxics and waste, clean water, or environmental policy. Applications outside the Pittsburgh metro should expect a funder that has leaned regional in practice. Make the national relevance of your work explicit.
2. William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, Climate and Energy
$30K to $500K, global plus US, rolling LOI (full proposals by invitation)

What we know: Hewlett gave roughly $1.15B in its most recent reported year against $14.2B in assets, and most of it flows to organizations already in the funder's universe. The cold LOI is accepted, but the full-proposal door is invitation-only. Treat it as a relationship-builder, not an application. The program concentrates on climate policy, clean transportation, methane and decarbonization, and the advocacy and research infrastructure that scales those shifts.
Realistic fit: established climate-policy, advocacy, or research orgs with prior funder affiliation or a known advisor in your network. Direct service and pure habitat conservation are outside scope.
If your environment work is community-led, capital-heavy, hyperlocal, or first-time, neither of these is the right fight today. Worth picking one funder you have a real path to and writing toward that path.
