Friday is environment & climate day on The Grant Brief.
Two open environmental grants this week with very different audiences and very different urgency: one is a feature-documentary fund closing in 48 hours; the other is a regional foundation's environment initiative with a clean LOI window through early July.
1. The Redford Center Grants
$40,000 plus year-long mentorship and a funded in-person summit / U.S. and international (at least one team member must reside in the U.S.) / Applications end Sunday, May 17, 2026 at 11:59 PM
What we know: The Redford Center's grants program, now in its sixth annual cycle, supports environmental filmmakers and frontline stories. Ten projects will be selected. Projects must be feature-length documentaries or docu-series with sample footage already available, and they must not yet be picture-locked. Grantees enter a two-year engagement: the program offers industry access and the option to apply for second-year funding the following year. The grants program operates under Sundance Preserve Inc. as a fiscal home, which is why the parent 990 doesn't list the individual grantee awards.
Realistic fit: independent documentary filmmakers or small production nonprofits with an environmental story already in progress and footage to show. If you're starting from scratch, the next cycle (2027) is the move.
2. Roy A. Hunt Foundation, Environment Initiative
$25,000 to $75,000 / United States / LOI window for the November 2026 Trustee meeting closes July 10, 2026

What we know: Roy A. Hunt is a Pittsburgh-based family foundation making $15.5 million in total grants in its most recent filing year. The Environment Initiative operates on Trustee meeting cycles; the current window, June 1 through July 10, 2026, feeds the November 2026 board meeting. Trustees aim to respond within 45 days of the deadline to inform applicants whether they are invited to submit a full proposal. The intake is a short letter of inquiry.
Realistic fit: 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofits with a specific, scoped project ready to summarize in a brief LOI. The 45-day response window is fast for a foundation of this size, which makes it a good fit when you have a concrete project and want to know quickly whether to spend time on a full proposal.
If you have been sitting on a documentary you can show samples for, the Redford deadline is in 48 hours. If you run an environmental program nonprofit, the Roy A. Hunt LOI is the cleanest open environment cycle on the spring calendar.
