Two health funders with very different theories of change, both with application windows about to open or close. One backs frontline mental health and advocacy organizations in New York and Philadelphia. The other gives early-career New England scientists two-year child-health research awards.

What we know: Van Ameringen is a $22M/year mental health funder with a tight geographic focus. Nearly all grants go to New York. The biggest anchor recipient is Fountain House ($2M renewed in 2023, $1M in 2025), the foundation's signature clubhouse partner. Recent $200K grants went to Children's Rights, Disability Rights New York, NYC Coalition to End Youth and Family Homelessness, and the DV Collective. National advocacy grants ($150K typical) have gone to ACLU's National Prison Project, NYCLU, Legal Aid Society, and Legal Action Center for mental-health parity work. The June 2026 cycle uses a short LOI: opens June 1, closes July 17, with proposals invited August 7.

Realistic fit: established mental health direct-service nonprofits in NYC or Philadelphia, plus national legal-services and advocacy orgs working on mental-health parity, prison mental health, or housing as mental-health intervention.

What we know: Hood made 71 grants over the past three years totaling $7.3M, with a $100K median. Massachusetts received 70% of all grants. Boston Children's Hospital alone got 19 grants worth $1.8M; Mass General got seven for $683K; Yale and Dartmouth round out the top recipients. The foundation runs two cycles per year and recently added a concept-paper step to reduce applicant burden up front.

Realistic fit: early-career investigators (PhD within five years, physician-scientists within seven) at New England academic medical centers with a hypothesis-driven pediatric research project and institutional support for indirect costs.

Two narrow lanes, both worth knowing about. If you run a direct-service or advocacy nonprofit in NYC, Philadelphia, or national mental-health advocacy, van Ameringen's July 17 LOI is the right entry. If you're an early-career pediatric researcher at a New England academic medical center, the Hood concept paper is your path. Outside those windows, save your time.
