Sunday is arts & culture day on The Grant Brief.

These three funders all support how stories get told through physical spaces, collections, and cultural institutions. What separates them: scale, geography, and how much door is actually open to a cold inquiry.

What we know: Mellon made 2,231 grants totaling $1.59 billion from 2023 to 2025, with a median of $500,000. Arts/culture and higher education dominate. Grants concentrate in New York (26%), California, and Illinois. HiP has distributed about $89 million to 95 projects in its first two years. Staff review unsolicited inquiries, but most grants come by invitation after engagement with Mellon program officers.

Realistic fit: established museums, universities, and cultural heritage organizations with a named project and prior institutional track record in humanities-driven public work.

What we know: This is a Chicago-specific program within a foundation that gave $356 million across 1,086 grants in its most recent year. Foundation-wide, 44% of domestic grants go to Illinois. The CEA program uses participatory grantmaking panels and awards general operating support. For organizations with budgets under $1 million, related funding flows through a partnership with the Field Foundation.

Realistic fit: Chicago-based arts organizations with budgets above $1 million, a clear equity lens, and existing community roots. Smaller orgs should look at the ART partnership track instead.

What we know: Terra made 341 grants totaling $27 million from 2023 to 2024, with a median of $50,000. Top recipients include the Smithsonian American Art Museum (5 grants), South Side Community Art Center, and The Studio Museum in Harlem. Terra also funds internationally, with 34 expenditure-responsibility grants across 15 countries, led by the United Kingdom, Germany, and France.

Realistic fit: museums and cultural organizations with permanent collections in American art that need support for reinstallation or reinterpretation projects. The August 3 inquiry deadline is three weeks out.

All three of these serve institutions, not individual artists or general-purpose nonprofits. If your organization doesn't hold a collection, steward a historic site, or run place-based cultural programming, these aren't the right fit.
