Two credible funders for globally-minded work — one of the most rigorous global-health grantmakers in the world, and a reputable health-policy funder that supports international exchange. Both are demanding, in different ways.

What we know: GiveWell directs money to a small set of evidence-backed, cost-effective global-health and poverty interventions. In its latest year it made 20 grants totaling $49.4 million at an $841,750 median, with top recipients including the Against Malaria Foundation ($19.2 million), Helen Keller International ($11.9 million), and the Clinton Health Access Initiative. It accepts programs for consideration year-round, but the bar is unusually high: GiveWell wants strong evidence of impact per dollar, not a compelling story.

Realistic fit: organizations running a rigorously evaluated intervention (or a credible plan to generate that evidence) in global health or poverty, with the data to show cost-effectiveness.

What we know: The Commonwealth Fund made 534 grants totaling $31.3 million at a $15,000 median, with recipients including SSRS and Harvard — a signal that most funding goes to health-policy research and academic institutions. Its international program supports cross-country learning and exchange on health-system performance. This is a research-and-policy funder, not a direct-service one, and much of its grantmaking is proactively sourced, so a cold LOI is a longer shot.

Realistic fit: health-policy research organizations, academic centers, and think tanks working on comparative health-system analysis or international exchange, with credentialed researchers.

If your work isn't rigorously evidence-based global health (GiveWell) or health-systems policy research (Commonwealth), neither of these is the right fit this week. Both reward demonstrated rigor over ambition.
