Two credible education funders open now, at opposite ends of the map: one regional foundation with deep Cincinnati roots, and one national federal program for college access. Different eligibility, different scale.

What we know: Millstone made 267 grants totaling $19.5 million in its most recent filing year, at a $40,000 median. About 90% of giving stays in Ohio, consistent with its Greater Cincinnati focus, with top recipients including Beech Acres Parenting Center ($1.25 million over 7 grants), ArtWorks ($1 million), and Talbert House ($1 million) — all established Cincinnati institutions. The LOI-to-invitation structure favors organizations already known in the local funding ecosystem.

Realistic fit: mid-size Cincinnati-area nonprofits with a track record in education or youth programming.

What we know: Educational Opportunity Centers are part of the long-running federal TRIO programs. They fund organizations to help low-income and first-generation adults navigate college admissions and financial aid, re-enter education, and complete degrees. As a federal competition it rewards demonstrated capacity, measurable outcomes, and a clear plan to serve a defined target population — the bar is high and the application is substantial, but the funding is multi-year and national.

Realistic fit: colleges, community-based organizations, and nonprofits with the infrastructure to run college-access advising for adults in a specific service area.

If you're outside Greater Cincinnati, Millstone isn't for you; if you can't staff a federal grant's reporting and outcomes requirements, TRIO isn't either. Both reward organizations that are already delivering, not planning to.
