Sunday is arts & culture day on The Grant Brief.

These three funders all support cultural infrastructure, but at completely different scales and entry points: emergency relief for a single venue, research funding routed through a sponsoring nonprofit, and preservation grants for archives with at-risk audio collections.

What we know: NIVF has made 15 grants totaling about $292,000, with a median of $15,000. Recipients include Club Q LLC, Happy Dog, and HQ Live Denver. Grants have gone to Colorado, North Carolina, Hawaii, California, and Ohio. The fund has distributed over $3.7 million since launching during COVID, so current 990 data captures only a slice.

Realistic fit: Independent live-music venues, comedy clubs, or festivals dealing with disaster damage, forced closures, or equipment loss. Both for-profit and nonprofit venues qualify; NIVA membership is not required.

What we know: The Warhol Foundation made 203 grants totaling $17.2 million in its latest year, with a median of $50,000. Arts and culture organizations received the vast majority of grants. New York (192 grants) and California (112) dominate geographically. The top grantee, Creative Capital Foundation, received $9.7 million across 5 grants, making it a major regrantor in the foundation's portfolio.

Realistic fit: 501(c)(3) arts organizations sponsoring a curator's research toward a future exhibition or visual arts project. The application comes from the org, not the curator directly.

What we know: NRPF is a small funder. Its 990 shows just 3 grants totaling $28,350, with a median of $8,500. Past recipients include Appalshop Inc. in Kentucky, UC Santa Barbara Library, and WYSO (Miami Valley Public Media). The foundation expects to make two to four awards this cycle.

Realistic fit: Public or nonprofit archives, libraries, or museums with audio collections on deteriorating physical media (reel-to-reel, cassette, obsolete formats) that need digitization.

If your organization isn't a venue in crisis, a visual arts nonprofit with a curatorial research project, or an archive holding at-risk audio, these aren't your grants. All three are narrow by design.
