Sunday is arts & culture day on The Grant Brief.

All three of these funders offer general operating support to arts organizations, but their size, scope, and selectivity are wildly different. That distinction matters more than the dollar range on the brochure.

What we know: This fund splits between arts and social/economic justice. Arts applicants should generally have budgets of $1.5 million or less. LOIs open twice a year (January 15 and July 15), and only selected applicants advance to full proposals reviewed by community panels. The fund emphasizes unrestricted operating support and welcomes fiscally sponsored organizations.

Realistic fit: small to mid-size arts orgs (theatre, dance, music, visual art/craft) or Black-led justice organizations with Pittsburgh-area ties.

What we know: Founded by Steven Spielberg, this foundation made 84 grants totaling $14.9 million over three years, with a median of $100,000. Grantmaking concentrates in New York (44%), California, and Washington, D.C. Top recipients include University of Southern California ($5 million, one grant), Jewish Story Partners, and Reboot Inc. That USC grant is a third of lifetime dollars, so the addressable pool for outside applicants is closer to $10 million. Only a small percentage of LOIs advance to invited proposals.

Realistic fit: established national Jewish arts, culture, storytelling, or interfaith organizations with a track record and existing funder relationships.

What we know: Shubert is one of the largest arts funders in the country: 2,566 grants totaling $157.6 million over four years, with a foundation-wide median of $35,000. The vast majority of grants (86%) go to arts/culture organizations. Top recipients are major theatre institutions: New York Shakespeare Festival, Chicago Theatre Group, Vivian Beaumont Theater. New York gets 28% of all grants, followed by California, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. Web research confirms a minimum budget requirement of $150,000 and that Shubert gave $45 million to 701 organizations in its most recent cycle.

Realistic fit: established arts institutions with strong administrative capacity and audited financials, not early-stage or emerging organizations.

If you're an early-stage arts nonprofit without audited financials or an institutional track record, the Opportunity Fund's LOI (July 15) is the realistic door here. Shubert and Righteous Persons both reward organizational maturity.
