Most health funders write big checks to big systems. The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation's President's Grants do something different: they fund discrete educational projects at the training level, where future clinicians are still being shaped. Up to $25,000 per award, rolling deadline, decisions in about two months. That speed and simplicity is unusual for health funding. It's also narrow. This is not a general health services grant.

What we know: Macy made 49 grants in its most recent 990 year totaling $2.9 million, with a median grant of $49,500 across all programs. The President's Grants are the smaller, faster track. Grantmaking skews heavily toward higher education (58 of 136 lifetime grants) and general health organizations (21 grants), with science research and human services picking up the rest. Geographically, New York (26 grants), Pennsylvania (14), and Massachusetts (12) account for nearly 40% of all awards. Top recipients include University of Washington ($399,000 across 3 grants), Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai ($306,000 across 3 grants), and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center ($300,000 across 3 grants), though those figures reflect larger program grants, not President's Grants specifically.

Realistic fit: academic medical centers, nursing schools, and university-based health professions programs running short-term projects on interprofessional training, DEI curriculum, or ethics education. Community health nonprofits without a teaching or training mission won't fit here.

If your organization delivers direct health services but doesn't train future clinicians, this one isn't for you. Macy funds the education pipeline, not the service delivery end. That's a clean and useful distinction to know before you spend time on an application.
