OpenAI is funding the nonprofits AI affects, not the ones building it. The Foundation's 2026 People-First AI Fund, announced this week, will distribute $50 million across legal aid clinics, libraries, museums, and local newsrooms. Tech-shop builders need not apply.

What we know: the 2026 cohort will distribute $50 million across three named categories. Community support services covers legal aid, public benefits navigation, and disability and accessibility services. Community arts and cultural organizations covers libraries, museums, and local arts nonprofits. Community journalism and media covers local newsrooms and public-interest media. Eligibility is narrow but clean. Applicants must be US-based 501(c)(3) public charities with annual operating budgets between $500,000 and $10 million, with operations primarily in one of the 50 states or D.C. The Foundation specifically prioritizes the $1 million to $8 million range. Standalone organizations only; departments within larger institutions are not eligible. Local chapters of national organizations with their own 501(c)(3) status are accepted, and select regranting organizations and community foundations under $15 million can apply. One application per EIN. The application is five essay questions of 250 to 300 words each, plus financial documentation, submitted through a SurveyMonkey Apply portal linked from the announcement page. 2025 recipients can reapply, but the Foundation is explicit that it is primarily funding new organizations this cycle.

Realistic fit: established community-serving nonprofits in legal aid, libraries / museums / local arts, or local journalism, with the documentation discipline for a five-essay application and budgets in the $1M to $8M sweet spot. The up-to-10%-of-budget formula means a $5M organization could see up to $500,000, which is material money worth a focused month of writing.

If you are a national policy org, an AI research shop, or a technical builder, this is not the right fight. The Fund is explicitly for the organizations adapting to AI's effects, not the ones developing it. Same if your budget is under $500,000 or over $10 million, or if your work falls outside the three named categories. The eligibility cutoffs are firm and the essay lift is real.
