Most sustainability prizes reward research or prototypes. The Zayed Sustainability Prize is different: it specifically funds organizations that already have operational impact on the ground and need capital to scale.

What we know: This is an 18-year-old prize with a $7.2 million total fund across five categories: Health, Food, Energy, Water, and Climate Action. Each category winner receives $1 million; each finalist receives $100,000. The program also includes a Global High Schools track at $150,000 per winning school. Eligible applicants are nonprofits or small/medium enterprises with demonstrated, scalable solutions. The selection process runs three stages (due diligence, Selection Committee, then Jury), so expect a long review cycle with winners announced in 2027.

Realistic fit: established nonprofits or social enterprises already deploying a tangible product or system (water purification, off-grid energy, food security tech) in communities, with measurable impact data they can point to. Early-stage concepts without field results won't clear the due diligence round.

This one is genuinely global and genuinely open, which is rare at the seven-figure level. But "open" and "competitive" are two different things. The prize has reached over 400 million beneficiaries through past winners, so the bar is high. If your organization has a working solution with documented reach, not just a pilot, it's worth the application time. If you're still at proof-of-concept, bookmark it for next year's cycle and spend 2026 building the impact data that makes the case.
