Friday is environment & climate day on The Grant Brief.
Most environment funders run one application cycle per year, which means missing the window costs you twelve months. The few that run two cycles are worth tracking — and one of them just published its summer LOI dates.
1. Roy A. Hunt Foundation: Environment Initiative
A long-running family foundation based in Pittsburgh that funds U.S.-based 501(c)(3) work across three pillars: Climate and Energy, Toxics and Waste, and Clean Water. Grants typically run $25,000 to $75,000 per project. The foundation has two cycles a year — the November 2026 cycle opens for Letters of Inquiry on June 1, 2026, and closes July 10, 2026. Fiscal sponsors are accepted; for-profits are not eligible. Applicants typically hear back within 45 days on whether the trustees are inviting a full proposal.
What's worth knowing: LOI-first cycles are kinder to small shops than full-proposal grants. You're investing 1-2 pages of writing to test interest before committing weeks to a full proposal. And because the LOI window doesn't open until June 1, you have all of May to research the foundation's recent grantees, sharpen your theory of change, and align your ask with their three program areas.
