Tuesday is equity & justice day on The Grant Brief.
Two funders are putting real dollars into community-led equity work right now: Indigenous-led stewardship of land and culture, and rolling year-round support for inequality and climate ventures. Different focal points, same trust-based posture.
1. First Nations Development Institute, Grantmaking Programs
First Nations runs a portfolio of active grant opportunities for Native-led organizations across stewardship of ancestral lands, food sovereignty, youth and culture, and tribal institutions. Recent California Stewardship of Ancestral Lands and Waters awards range from $50,000 to $75,000. Multiple open RFPs at any given time, with rolling and time-bound cycles depending on the program.
2. Nathan Cummings Foundation, Letters of Inquiry (LOI) Program
NCF welcomes proposals year-round through its LOI portals across climate change and inequality work. Venture Grants up to $100,000 for one-year initiatives. Open to nonprofits across the U.S. The foundation evaluates LOIs on a rolling basis with decisions within 12 weeks.
Something we keep noticing: the strongest equity funders right now are pairing speed (rolling LOIs, multiple concurrent opportunities) with trust-based practices (no full-proposal first ask, partnership framing). It's a meaningful shift from the multi-stage gauntlets of five years ago.
For development directors: when a funder offers rolling LOIs versus a fixed deadline cycle, does it actually change how often you reach out, or does the application still get pushed to the back of the quarter?
