NLnet Foundation is an Amsterdam-based private foundation that primarily funds free/open-source software, libre hardware, open standards and other internet commons that advance a decentralized, privacy-respecting public-interest internet. They favor technical R&D and tooling (infrastructure, secure communications, privacy-preserving payments, collaboration tooling) and typically fund small-to-medium technology projects and developer-led initiatives rather than service delivery or charitable programs. Many of their programs are delivered as NGI (Next Generation Internet) partnership calls and prioritize projects that can be publicly released under libre/open licenses and that align with European NGI eligibility or priorities.
