Who can apply: Working merchant seafarer or fisherman with at least five years' sea service (or former seafarer with five years' service or service cut short by accident/illness). Dependants (spouse, widow(er), child under 18) of eligible seafarers may apply. Applications are normally submitted via a caseworker from an affiliated maritime/welfare organisation (e.g., Shipwrecked Mariners' Society, Fishermen's Mission, SSAFA, Nautilus); SHS will accept application forms from other organisations.
